Friends of Denver Parks Makes a Big Impression at Cabinet Meeting

Good Day to Friends of Denver Parks,Renee Lewis displays sign during Conference in the City Sep 7
Thought there would be an interest in how things went at the Cabinet Meeting.   We had great group of folks show up and hold signs, also many known supporters in the audience.
It was so nice to see everyone’s smiling faces again. Joe’s new sign was the best. Joe was a bit naughty and let Deborah Johnson Clerk and Recorder know how he felt about her not seeking independent counsel before denying us the right to vote. .
We got a lot of questions from people who were curious about the green t-shirts and signs. We were able to do education on many fronts.   I did get the chance to speak with many of the politicians involved.  Scott Gilmore again gleefully informed me that he will be killing the prairie dog colony.  Of course, our conversation was not entirely cordial.  Not sure I’m so keen on our Parks and Recreation Dept leadership. Join Us For September 7 Cabinet In The Community

Dear Friends of Denver Parks,
Just getting back from a Labor Day Holiday, so time to roll up our

Friends Of Denver Parks Protest at a Cabinet In The City earlier in the year

sleeves and keep up the momentum.  We don’t want to lose any ground in this fight.  Please join us Saturday, September 7, 2013, from 9 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. at Teller Elementary School, 1150 Garfield St.
(See Below) This is a letter sent out by the Mayors office. I have highlighted certain words in the Mayor Hancock letter to illustrate the message of concern from our standpoint. Friends of Denver Parks is asking everyone possible to show up for this meeting and let Mayor Hancock be aware of our concerns.   WEAR YOUR GREEN T-SHIRTS!!!  WE PLAN TO HAVE PROTEST SIGNS AVAILABLE ALSO.
The urgency of this situation has been brought home even more so than we could have imagined.   It has come to our attention that the City Attorney of Englewood has quoted our case as proof that parks can be transferred administratively without a vote of the people.  Already we can see that what happens in the Friends of Denver Parks case will likely be established as case law. According to park advocate Laurette Barrentino, the City of Englewood has land grabbed a park, a prime property on the light rail, and sold it at a bargain to a friend of a City Councilman.  Continue reading

Friends of Denver Parks v. City of Denver, Debra Johnson, and Denver Public Schools – Update

Friends of Denver Parks plaintiffs, Zelda Hawkins, left, John Case, and Steve Waldstein, right, take about their court case against the City of Denver standing inside Hentzell Park along the Cherry Creek bike path near Hampden Ave on June 01, 2013. (THE DENVER POST | Andy Cross)

Dear Friends,
All of us continue to be inspired by the sacrifices of each other to prevent the destruction of Hampden Heights North Park.  We continue to make progress in the fight against city hall.
On Monday August 19, 2013 Friends of Denver Parks filed 25 more petition sections at the clerk and recorder’s office, totaling 1,297 signatures. A copy of the letter to the clerk and recorder with a list of the petition sections and circulators is attached.  Thanks to all of you who circulated petitions successfully. Please go here to see letter to Clerk and Recorder
Also on August 19 Judge Stern signed an order allowing the plaintiffs to proceed on their revised third amended complaint.  A copy of the order is attached here.
The revised third amended complaint makes the claims set forth below.  These claims are scheduled for a seven day trial in Judge Stern’s courtroom (courtroom 376, Denver District Court) starting May 19, 2014. We have requested trial by jury because the issue in dispute involves title to real property, for which Colorado allows trial by jury.  The city opposes trial by jury.  The city wants judge Stern to hear the evidence and decide the case without a jury.
