Friends of Denver Parks Makes a Big Impression at Cabinet Meeting

Thought there would be an interest in how things went at the Cabinet Meeting.   We had great group of folks show up and hold signs, also many known supporters in the audience.
It was so nice to see everyone’s smiling faces again. Joe’s new sign was the best. Joe was a bit naughty and let Deborah Johnson Clerk and Recorder know how he felt about her not seeking independent counsel before denying us the right to vote. .
We got a lot of questions from people who were curious about the green t-shirts and signs. We were able to do education on many fronts.   I did get the chance to speak with many of the politicians involved.  Scott Gilmore again gleefully informed me that he will be killing the prairie dog colony.  Of course, our conversation was not entirely cordial.  Not sure I’m so keen on our Parks and Recreation Dept leadership. Friends of Denver Parks v. City of Denver, Debra Johnson, and Denver Public Schools – Update

Dear Friends,
All of us continue to be inspired by the sacrifices of each other to prevent the destruction of Hampden Heights North Park.  We continue to make progress in the fight against city hall.
On Monday August 19, 2013 Friends of Denver Parks filed 25 more petition sections at the clerk and recorder’s office, totaling 1,297 signatures. A copy of the letter to the clerk and recorder with a list of the petition sections and circulators is attached.  Thanks to all of you who circulated petitions successfully. Also on August 19 Judge Stern signed an order allowing the plaintiffs to proceed on their revised third amended complaint.  A copy of the order is attached here.
The revised third amended complaint makes the claims set forth below.  These claims are scheduled for a seven day trial in Judge Stern’s courtroom (courtroom 376, Denver District Court) starting May 19, 2014. We have requested trial by jury because the issue in dispute involves title to real property, for which Colorado allows trial by jury.  The city opposes trial by jury.  The city wants judge Stern to hear the evidence and decide the case without a jury.

Hentzell Park: City’s rejection of petition spurs new challenge

They started out questioning the ability of Denver city officials to  trade a formerly designated natural area for an office building. But opponents of the Hentzell Park land swap now have another bone to pick with Denver Clerk and Recorder Debra Johnson, claiming that her rejection of their efforts to put the issue on the ballot amounts to playing high-stakes poker with a stacked deck. The dispute, they say, raises a basic constitutional issue: What happens to the right to petition the government for redress if you need the government’s permission to do so?
