Prairie Dogs Exterminated At Hampden Heights North Park

On April 1, 2013 Denver City Council passed ordinance 168 that formally
designated this land as part of Paul Hentzell Park and Natural Area. On October
7, the City exterminated the prairie dogs in the natural area and covered their
holes.  Prairie dogs are the cornerstone food species for coyotes, foxes, owls,
hawks and eagles that live in this prairie remnant.
Friends of Denver Parks has requested an injunction from the Colorado Court of
Appeals to prevent the sale of park land and the destruction of wildlife in
adjacent Hampden Heights North Park.  Please see our website

Friends of Denver Parks Announces Gala to Preserve Open Space

Friends of Denver Parks has announced a fundraising gala, A Hootenanny Good Time, to be held on Saturday, October 26, 6:00-10:00 p.m., at the Crystal Rose, 9755 East Hampden Avenue in Denver.  All are welcome.  Tickets are $100 per person.  The evening includes dinner, dancing, cash bar, and the chance to enjoy the company of energetic committed citizens.
The group is excited to bring all of its supporters together in one place.  “We are proud that our venture is composed of citizens who are Democrats, Republicans, Independents, VIP’s, professionals, workers, environmentalists, business owners, neighbors, rich, and poor.  We cover the spectrum of citizens who simply want to preserve this open space as part of our community where people can live within the city, while enjoying the natural beauty that surrounds us.  This was Denver’s zoning and land use plan since 1967.  Hampden Heights North Park has been treated as a park since it was acquired in 1936.  We want to preserve it as a dedicated park for future generations,” said Renee Lewis, President of Friends of Denver Parks. Friends of Denver Parks Makes a Big Impression at Cabinet Meeting

Thought there would be an interest in how things went at the Cabinet Meeting.   We had great group of folks show up and hold signs, also many known supporters in the audience.
It was so nice to see everyone’s smiling faces again. Joe’s new sign was the best. Joe was a bit naughty and let Deborah Johnson Clerk and Recorder know how he felt about her not seeking independent counsel before denying us the right to vote. .
We got a lot of questions from people who were curious about the green t-shirts and signs. We were able to do education on many fronts.   I did get the chance to speak with many of the politicians involved.  Scott Gilmore again gleefully informed me that he will be killing the prairie dog colony.  Of course, our conversation was not entirely cordial.  Not sure I’m so keen on our Parks and Recreation Dept leadership.
